Today is Christmas. Our humans family went for a X'mas feast at Mayim Chinese Restaurant located in westmall.

Then we had, Salmon stew and sashimi treats!
it's been some time since we last had Salmon stew and our 1st time for the sashimi treats!

It's finally been a week since we moved and now get some time to update our blog...
Alhough we are only moving to another street in the same district but it was a lot of work!

During and on the acutal day of house moving was a big mess! a lot of things has to be packed, furniture has to be moved,shifted to the lorry which will transport all of it to the new house.

3 of us was temperally locked in the cage to prevent from any accident occuring while our humans are busy moving,shifting and packing the furniture, things and other stuff..
It was pretty long hours from early morning to late night.

Then in between, we gets some short walks before finally "transporting" us to the new house..
Amber has her final picture taken at the old house areas with one of her usual friends whom she always plays with during walks.. (Amber: a pity i did not get to take photos with a lot of my friends whom i always met and play with during walks)

Cat owners may need registration

SINGAPORE: Authorities are looking into better ways of encouraging responsible cat ownership and are exploring a pilot project that may involve registering the animal.

Foreign Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam revealed this at the launch of a cat feeding station at his ward of Chong Pang in Nee Soon GRC.

Having a designated area for strays will help minimise disturbance and mess.

"It creates a mindset and you train the cats also to come to that place. It is a convenient area for feeding, it will be useful, and it's easier to clean up as well. Otherwise, you have people feeding cats at many different locations, and it becomes more troublesome," noted Mr Shanmugam.

The cat feeding station is located at Blk 115A, Yishun Ring Road.

A recent survey by the Cat Welfare Society showed that 85% of respondents were happy to keep sterilised strays in the estate, and that many would support a common feeding area.

But the Cat Welfare Society says managing the cat population needs to involve pet owners too.

It says pet cats are usually to blame for problems faced by residents, such as cat droppings.

Mr Shanmugam said he has had discussions with the National Development Ministry and animal groups on the pilot project in Chong Pang.

Besides registering their cats, owners may also be persuaded to have only one cat.

Channel NewsAsia understands the project could be launched as early as next month.

Mr Shanmugam said: "We do a pilot because it has not been done before, and this will help us understand the issues, how to do it properly. And if it's successful - and I don't see why it shouldn't be - it can be replicated elsewhere. So I was prepared to take the lead and put in the resources."

Responding to Channel NewsAsia, a spokesperson from the National Development Ministry said the pilot scheme is one of several suggestions that surfaced during public consultation on pet ownership and the management of strays, and that discussions are still on-going.

Veron Lau, vice-president of the Cat Welfare Society, said that such a project will "close the loop" on managing the cat population as current efforts are mainly targeted at sterilising and managing strays, and more needs to be done to tackle problems like pet abandonment.

Ms Lau said that responsible pet ownership will involve people keeping their cats indoors, sterilising and registering them. But limiting households to only one cat is not ideal, as animals require companionship.

"It's not the number of animals you have; it's how responsible you are as an owner," Ms Lau said, when asked if allowing more pets might result in greater disturbance.

Children aged under 16 should be banned from buying pets, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said on Friday.

These youngsters may not have the maturity or money to take care of them properly, the group added.

They are also more prone to impulse buying, which could lead to pets being abandoned once the novelty wears off.

The recommendation was one of several proposed changes to the law contained in a draft document released by the society on Friday. Others include doubling the maximum penalty for people who abuse animals, banning them from keeping pets in exceptional cases, and publishing a list of what counts as animal cruelty.

Miracle Dog Survives Gas Chamber Comes to New Jersey for Adoption

A miracle dog that did not die when put into a gas chamber has come to New Jersey for adoption after his incredible survival.

Daniel the beagle was a stray in Florence, Ala., when he was placed into a shelter by animal control officials. After he was not claimed or adopted, he was put into a gas chamber to be put down with other unadopted dogs.

But after the animal control officer went back to the chamber, there was Daniel, still alive.

“They were all dead except for Daniel who was wagging his tail," said Linda Schiller of Eleventh Hour Rescue, the group that rescued Daniel and brought him to New Jersey. "He’s a miracle.”

Gassing chambers work by pumping carbon monoxide into a sealed space, eventually suffocating the animals.

Some argue it takes only minutes for the animals to lose consciousness and die, but the gas cycle is run for much longer, as much as 30 minutes, to be sure it has worked.

According to Vincent Grasso, an animal control officer in Florence, Daniel had been inside the chamber with the other dogs for a scheduled 17-minute cycle.

Grasso said it is highly unusual for a dog to emerge from the chamber alive, and it is shelter policy that if that happens, a dog would be given a second chance.

Grasso said they brought Daniel to see the veterinarian and to make sure he was OK. Once Daniel was found to be in good health, they began to search for a permanent home.

Schiller and her rescue group learned of Daniel’s miraculous story and brought him to New Jersey, where they are looking for a family to take care of him. She also hopes that this tough little beagle will become the face of a campaign against gassing.

According to the Humane Society, many states still allow animal gassing in some form. A growing number, including New York and New Jersey, have banned it.

Alabama has also banned gassing but the law will not take effect until next year. The Humane Society estimates that between six million and eight million animals are brought to shelters every year, and that as many as four million of them are euthanized.

“It’s a common misconception that they only gas bad or mean dogs,” said Schiller. “They gas nursing moms and babies, they gas 8-week-old puppies. They gas a dog like Daniel, who has a lot of life and is a good dog.”

Schiller hopes that the publicity around Daniel’s story will generate new interest for people to adopt shelter pets.

“There are thousands of dogs dying as we speak,” said Schiller. “So if you can’t adopt Daniel then maybe you can adopt another pet from Eleventh Hour Rescue or from your local shelter.”

Hairballs: Getting a hold on your pet’s shedding

Red flags

You should consider the sort of pet you own. In general, says Dr. Heng from The Joyous Vet, breeds with thick fur coats like Siberian Huskies, Golden Retrievers and Collies shed seriously. This is due in part to humidity-led skin problems like heat stress. That being said, "Short coats like the Jack Russell also shed continuously as their fur growth cycle is short."

The age of your pet also informs the effort that goes into managing your companion's fur. Younger pets are more prone to parasites, which leads to skin problems, excessive scratching and shedding. For older pets, the problem tends to be hormonal as their levels go out of whack. Sterilised pets are more prone to such issues.

If there seems to be excessive shedding, look out, anywhere on your pet, for bald patches, intense itchiness (along with heavy-duty scratching), redness, dried skin scabs, severe inflammation and pus production. If you find any of these, the problem is probably an underlying condition that can only be addressed by your vet.

Stress is sometimes a determining factor in the amount of shedding your pet does. Dogs have to be walked regularly or you might find them ripping chunks of fuzz off themselves in sheer boredom.

Supplementation

A good Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) supplement is paramount for skin health, particularly Omega 3. While most dry pet foods "claim" to have it in oodles, more often than not, they don't. This is due to Omega 3's extreme sensitivity to light and oxidation. EFAs supplementation applies more to dogs than cats, says Dr. Ly form The Animal Recovery Centre. Stress causes internal inflammation and Omega 3 is an anti-inflammatory oil. "A large percentage of dogs have an inherited inability to neutralize inflammation caused by stress."

Dr. Ly also recommends a good multi-vitamin, and zinc supplementation. Dr. Heng adds that Vitamin C, Flaxseed oil and cod liver oil are good, too, although you'll need to check with your vet for the recommended dosage.

Nutrition

For Dr. Ly, a healthy diet is the panacea to your pet's woes—or in the case of minimal shedding—yours. To minimise this, a mixture of fresh food and commercial food is ideal. He points to the denaturation of protein in high temperature food processing in some kibble brands. "When food is processed at high temperatures, a lot of the essential amino acids are damaged and a lot of nutrients are completely eliminated. And a lot of the nutrients are completely eliminated. And a lot of the micronutrients including enzymes are not found in processed foods even though a lot of them meet the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) requirements. But these requirements only meet the minimum daily needs of your pet."

I usually tell people that fresh is good, but raw is even better, says Dr. Ly, who observed that undomesticated animals on a diet of raw prey "look better" than their counterparts in captivity. He also noted that some animals, for example, might be allergic to processed lamb, but when given raw lamb, they do not show signs of allergy.

Grooming

Make sure your pet's groomer is professional enough to recognize skin and coat problems. There are groomers out there who are nothing more than glorified shampoo salesmen. A "professional" groomer, says Dr Ly, would also check with the pet's owner for allergies, past and present. "What I see very often is animals coming in after undergoing grooming, because they break out. They shed even more, they develop skin problems."

The more humid the weather, the more knots there are in your pet's fur, the more knots, the more skin problems, which lead to excessive shedding. Regular brushing of your pet helps. Dr. Heng suggests daily brushing in Singapore's climate. Hiroshi, a groomer with School of Pet Grooming, suggests paying more attention to the neck and back area (where the tail is), because these areas shed more.

Regular grooming might be the single most effective way of keeping fur off your furniture. Use a slicker brush and a shedding comb, go through your dog's hair until it runs smoothly. For dogs with undercoats, consider using an undercoat rake to pull out loose hairs. Use a dematting rake to untangle the matts. Don't be worried if you pull out chunks.

Go to the vets'

Regular visits to the vet would be your final defense and safety net to minimise shedding. We will make sure there are no parasites or underlying skin problems, that the shampoo is correct, and that the diet is adequate, says Dr. Ly. "The skin is a reflection of your internal organs, if your pet's skin is unhealthy, it has internal health problems. What is on the inside will show on the skin first. You should take care of the internal problems first before treating the skin. It's a sign that your pet has internal problems when it has skin and coat problems."

Use low-allergen products

A lot of animals with skin and coat problems find perfumes shampoos intolerable. These often exacerbate the condition, so it is advisable to get a low allergen shampoo. Make sure it is not perfumed and harsh chemicals like Sodium Lauyl Sulfate (the foaming agent that is present in most shampoos) are not present. Dr. Ly doesn't believe in using products for his pets (he has two dogs and a cat) that he would not use on himself. "If I don't believe in the products, how can I use it on my animal companions? 80 to 90 per cent of the supplements, foods, drugs and shampoos I dispense in my practice are fit for human use."

Retired police dogs get new homes in adoption drive

Bonnie, a springer spaniel from Britain, has been a tracking and detection dog with the Singapore Police Force's K-9 Unit for the last few years.

Now aged six, it has begun a new chapter of its life - retirement - and was adopted by a family here. Of the more than 10 former police dogs offered for adoption this month, at least six have been rehomed, a police spokesman told The Straits Times.

About 40 such dogs - german shepherds, belgian shepherds, springer spaniels and labradors - are retired each year, reported Home Team News, the online community newspaper of those in the Ministry of Home Affairs and its safety and security agencies.

The police have made a practice of rehoming retiring dogs since 1984, holding up to three adoption drives each year.

SPCA is giving out a $1000 reward for information on the deaths of two kittens. The kittens were found dead at the void deck of Block 212 Marsiling Crescent. Both kittens suffered serious injuries to their heads.

The kittens were found by a member of the public on Saturday, Oct 8. One of the kittens had its skull smashed, and the other suffered traumatic impact to the head and neck region.

The SPCA is offering a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the person/s responsible.

Two dead puppies have been found over a three-day period by Bukit Batok residents. STOMPer Karen suspects they were killed by a man who was spotted near a PUB facility carrying a large stick.

The STOMPer explained the situation:

"This dead puppy of about seven weeks of age was found in Bukit Batok. Another was also found dead two nights before this.

"It was apparently strangled and flung across a road in Bukit Batok. The young pup was spotted uphill where the body landed after it was killed.

"The road where it was found turns upwards to a hill with a water supply facility. This area is normally out of bounds to the public. The only visitors to this place would be the PUB workers who check the meters daily.

"They had buried the first puppy before this second one was found.

"On the night of Sep 15, at 11.20pm, residents had spotted a suspicious-looking man. He had a big stick with him, walking around in the wooded area where the puppies were found.

"When he was questioned about his motives, he had explained that he was looking at frogs. Fifteen hours later, residents had found the carcass of one of the puppies.

"The authorities have so far not acted. Should we keep quiet as well? It is very disappointing to know that those who are supposed to speak for the animals are not doing so.

"The dead pup has been sent for an autopsy. Is this going to be another wild goose chase to nab the perpetrators?"

The STOMPer wrote:

"This photograph shows a Chow Chow - a breed of dogs that is known to be good guardians - being pushed around in a pram.

"I thought it was cute but extremely weird -- some Singaporeans aren't able to afford a pram for their babies yet you have dogs being pushed around in them.

"This could be a sign of an affluent society."

STOMPer badentrepreneur was shocked to find out that a 13-year-old boy had been adopting dogs for free, only to sell them for his personal profit. This is an example of bad entrepreneurship, says the STOMPer.

In a news report in the Straits Times today (Oct 3), a 13-year-old boy was given a conditional police warning after pet lovers called to attention his tactics of adopting a dog for free, then selling them for profit.

The boy would pose as a grieving dog owner and approach people online, begging them to let him adopt their pedigree dogs. He even went as far as to say that their dogs reminded him of his recently deceased pet dog.

After the adoption went through, he would put the dogs up for sale online. He posted about 20 advertisements in total, selling dogs from various breeds such as Jack Russells to Japanese spitzes for prices ranging from $250 to $400.

He was finally caught after two dog owners made police reports.

The boy claimed that he had done nothing wrong as the pet was 'his property to sell' once he had adopted it.

The STOMPer commented:

"A very, very small part of me congratulates this ambitious boy on his ingenuity. He will be a very good and evil businessman who doesn't give two hoots about preying on people's emotions for personal gain.

"But a much larger part of me wants to wring him by the neck for being that manipulative, cruel and selfish.

"Adoption is a difficult process for both the adoptee and those letting it go. He is belittling that commitment with his greedy actions.

"The worst part is how unremorseful he is! This kid must really be deprived of good parents to be so callous about his treatment of living things.

"If he wants extra money, he should get a part-time job and earn it like everyone else does.

"Money earned from cheating others will never bring you happiness."

8) Guinefort, the Saint of Infants

A select few people have been given the designation of "Saint," but only one dog has also received that distinction. The story goes that a 13th century French knight left his infant son in the care of his greyhound, Guinefort, for the day (you'll notice the knight in this tale is not the patron saint of parenting). Upon returning home, the knight found the home torn apart, blood on the dog's face, and his son nowhere in sight. Thinking his dog had eaten the child, the knight instantly shot him with an arrow, only to find his son moments later, alive and well, next to the mutilated remains of a snake. The knight was so upset by his mistake that he buried Guinefort in a well and erected a shrine on top of it. Local villagers prayed to the brave dog even after a visiting inquisitor had the shrine destroyed and labeled the dog a heretic.

7) Owney, the Maildog

Some dogs fetch the paper, but Owney helped fetch buckets of mail all over the country. When
postal workers in Albany, New York found a stray mutt in their office, they decided to let him sleep on a pile of mailbags. Apparently, the dog was attracted to the scent of the bags, since he followed them right onto a train and rode with them all over the state and eventually the country. By now, the workers at the Albany office had named him "Owney," and became worried that he would be lost during his travels. So they gave him a collar with a tag that read "Owney, Post Office, Albany, New York." Owney became the unofficial mascot of the railway mail service, and postal clerks saw him as a good luck charm, since none of the trains he rode on ever crashed.

Other post offices began to give him tags for each place he visited, until the Postmaster General even gave him a jacket to hold them all. Owney even made an around the world trip through Asia
and Europe before arriving back in Albany. Unfortunately, Owney's life ended after a postal worker in Toledo, Ohio mistreated him and was bitten. Fearing the dog was rabid, a local police officer shot him. Owney's preserved body and medals are now on display at the US Postal Museum in
Washington, DC.

6) Stubby (or "Sergeant Stubby" to you)

It's not often that a dog gets promoted to the rank of sergeant for combat duty. In fact, it's only happened once in history. A young stray was found on the Yale campus by John Robert Conroy,
who named him "Stubby." Conroy was undergoing military training, and when it came time for him to ship out for World War I, he smuggled Stubby along with him. For the next 18 months, Stubby became one of many war dogs living in the trenches of France, but he soon distinguished himself enough to earn the official rank of sergeant. How? By doing things most humans soldiers never even get a chance to do. Stubby's acute sense of smell and hearing allowed him to warn his unit of poison gas attacks and incoming artillery. He managed to locate and rescue wounded soldiers on the battlefield and even single-handedly captured a German spy. Overall, he participated in 17 battles, and was even awarded several patches and medals -- which he wore on a coat for him by the women of a liberated French town. After the war, Conroy smuggled Stubby back home, where he went on to meet several presidents and act as Georgetown's football mascot before passing away in Conroy's arms.

5) Barry, the Superdog dog of Switzerland

If a dog ends up stuffed and mounted in a Swiss natural history museum almost immediately following his death, odds are he's either in an exhibit about different dog breeds, or he's Barry the St. Bernard. Barry worked as a rescue dog in the mountains of Switzerland near a monastary in Great St. Bernard pass, where he also lived. During the 12 years that Barry lived there (1800-1812), he is credited with rescuing at least 40 people who got lost in the Alps during heavy snow. One famous tale says Barry discovered a small child on top of an icy ledge and began licking his face to keep him warm and awake, while barking loudly for the monks to find them (which he was trained to do). When the snow began to fall even harder and the monks couldn't climb the steep cliff the two were on, the young boy wrapped his arms around Barry's neck and the dog carried him all the way down the mountain (which he was not trained to do. Barry was eventually retired in 1812, and lived out the rest of his days under the care of a monk.

4 & 3) Balto and Togo, the sled dogs that helped stop an epidemic

In the world of sled dog heroics, Togo and Balto are kind of like Nikolai Tesla and Thomas Edison: one arguably accomplished more, but the other got all the credit. Both were sled dogs assigned to lead a team through Alaska carrying serum for the town of Nome. In January of 1925, doctors in the area feared that a diptheria epidemic could hit the whole town, but the only available serum was in Anchorage, almost 1000 miles away. With their only aircraft's engines frozen, officials in Anchorage decided the serum would be relayed by several teams of sled dogs.

Togo's team was chosen to carry the serum through the most treacherous part of the route, and ended up traveling almost twice the distance of any of the other teams. Balto's team took the cargo for the last leg of the journey, and ultimately delivered the serum ahead of schedule. Because he was the one who finished the run, Balto received almost all of the glory for it -- even having some of Togo's achievements attributed to him and a statue erected in New York's Central Park. Both dogs however now have their remains on display in separate museums.

2) Hachiko, man's most loyal friend

You should probably prepare yourself for a sad dog story, because this one's a doozy. In 1924, a
professor Hidesaburo Ueno from the University of Tokyo brought his dog, Hachiko, to live with him. The two developed a routine, where the dog would see the professor off at his home and then meet him at the Shibuya train station later. Then one day, the professor didn't show up at the train station. He'd had a stroke at the university and died. Hachiko was given away to another owner, but he would often escape and turn up at his old home. The dog must have eventually realized that Ueno wasn't coming home, and so he went to look for him at the train station. For ten years, Hachiko would arrive at the train station exactly when the evening train showed up and would wait for his former owner. Other commuters noticed the loyal pooch and began to bring him food and snacks. He even gained national attention when a former student of Ueno's published several articles about him. One artist even built and erected a bronze statue of the dog while he was still alive. Hachiko died in 1935, but his legend continues to live on in Japan. His story was even recently made into a film, with Richard Gere playing Professor Ueno.

1) Chips, the War Dog

There are many other dogs that could be called "The War Dog," but how many of those have a Disney movie by that name chronicling their exploits? Chips sure does, and with good reason. During World War II, the shepherd mix was donated to the war effort and was soon on the front lines acting as a tank guard dog in Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. At one point, he dragged a phone cable across a raging battlefield, so that his platoon could call for backup. The one event Chips is most known for though happened on a beach in Sicily. When he and his handler came under fire from a hidden pillbox, Chips sprang from his handler and dove straight into the enemy emplacement. The soldiers inside came out moments later and surrendered, with Chips behind them.

That would be impressive enough, but later that night he also alerted his squad to some approaching Italians, who were promptly captured as well. Chips received a Silver Star and a Purple Heart for his adventures, but had them stripped away when dogs were reclassified in the military as "equipment," making him the last canine to be officially decorated.

Laika the 1st Dog that is sent to the orbit of outer space!

The 1st animal sent to the space is a dog named laika.
At a time when space travel was still new, scientists chose to send animals for
experiments on space travel. While the Americans went with monkeys and chimpanzees,
the russians preferred dogs for their experiments, starting off with Laika in 1957.

Laika, a stray dog found on the streets was chosen for their project, with their
reasoning being that strays were more accustomed to living in harsh conditions.

As part of their space acclimatization training, the dogs stayedi n progressively
smaller cages, and were trained to eat only high nutrition gels as food.

Unfortunatunately,Laika died a few hours of the spacecraft being launched, due to
overheating in the capsule as it entered earth. However, due to the sensitivity of
the space program at that time, the newspapers reported its death as being caused
by a lack of oxygen, or by poisoned food before the oxygen ran out.

Despite the cruel conditions which laika endured, at least by modern standards,
her maiden space orbit helped prove that living things could survive a launch into
space and tolerate the effects of weightlessness.

A memmorial was built near the Russian cosmonaut training facility, depicting a
dog standing on top of a rocket.

First dog in space died within hours

The dog Laika, the first living creature to orbit the Earth, did not live nearly as long as Soviet officials led the world to believe.

The animal, launched on a one-way trip on board Sputnik 2 in November 1957, was said to have died painlessly in orbit about a week after blast-off.

Now, it has been revealed she died from overheating and panic just a few hours after the mission started.

The new evidence was presented at the recent World Space Congress in Houston, Texas, US, by Dimitri Malashenkov of the Institute for Biological Problems in Moscow.

Noted space historian Sven Grahn told BBC News Online that the new information was surprising and significant as it ended more than 40 years of speculation about Laika's fate.

Space pioneer

Laika's mission on board Sputnik 2 stunned the world. Sputnik 1, the world's first satellite, had been launched less than one month before.

Laika had been a stray

It was a metal sphere weighing about 18 kg (40 lbs) and was far heavier than anything the United States was contemplating launching.

An astonished world witnessed the launch of Sputnik 2 weighing 113 kg (250 lbs) and carrying the first living thing to go into orbit - the dog Laika.

The animal had been a stray wandering the streets of Moscow when she was captured and prepared for a space mission.

Shortly after launch the Soviets said that Laika was not destined to return alive and would die in space. The statement caused outrage to many observers.

Racing pulse

Dr Malashenkov has now revealed several new details about Laika's mission, such as her food being in jelly form and that she was chained to prevent her turning around.

There was a carbon dioxide absorbing device in the cabin to prevent the accumulation of this toxic gas, as well as an oxygen generator.

A fan was automatically activated to keep the dog cool when the capsule's temperature exceeded 15 deg Celsius.

According to Dr Malashenkov, a great deal of work had to be done to adapt a group of dogs to the conditions in the tight cabin of Sputnik 2. They were kept in gradually smaller cages for periods up to 15-20 days.

Three dogs were trained for the Sputnik 2 flight: Albina, Laika and Mushka. Albina was the first "backup", having flown twice on a high-altitude rocket. Mushka was used to test instrumentation and life support.

Death in space

Medical sensors placed on Laika indicated that during launch her pulse rate went up by a factor of three above its resting level.

At the start of weightlessness, her pulse rate decreased. It took three times longer than after a centrifuge ride on the ground to return Laika's heartbeat to pre-launch values, an indication of the stress she was suffering.

Dr Malashenkov also revealed how Laika died. Telemetry from the Sputnik 2 capsule showed that the temperature and humidity increased after the start of the mission.

After five to seven hours into the flight, no lifesigns were being received from Laika. By the fourth orbit it was apparent that Laika had died from overheating and stress.

Previously, it has been thought that Laika survived at least four days in space and perhaps even a week when Sputnik's transmitters failed.

Despite surviving for just a few hours, Laika's place in space history is assured and the information she provided proved that a living organism could tolerate a long time in weightlessness and paved the way for humans in space.

Laika's "coffin" circled the Earth 2,570 times and burned up in the Earth's atmosphere on 4 April 1958.

Three lion cubs were born to Night Safari's resident lions, Khapat and Amba on March 21, 2011. Wildlife Reserves Singapore shares pictures of these adorable cubs getting their booster injections.

The tawny three-month-olds were declared healthy after a mandatory vaccination against respiratory and systemic infections. Their first health check took place two months after they were born on 21 March 2011.

The Asian lion is a unique subspecies that splits from the African lion. It is smaller in size and sports a less significant mane compared to its African cousin.

Through Night Safari’s captive breeding programme, Wildlife Reserves Singapore hopes to be able to increase the number of Asian lions both in the wild and in captivity.

Most of the wild Asian lion population is found in India’s Gir Forest, a protected santuary where about 300 of these magnificent animals roam. There are an additional 60 of them living in zoos.

Under the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN), they are listed as ‘endangered’. One of the problems faced by the Asian lion in the wild is in-breeding which has resulted in weaker individuals.

To date, Night Safari has successfully bred seven Asian lion cubs in captivity.

Eighteen trainers have applied for accreditation with the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA), which wants owners to send all potentially dangerous dogs to approved trainers.

The ruling, which came into effect last November, affects mastiffs, German shepherds, bull terriers, doberman pinschers, rottweilers, their crosses and any dog with a history of unprovoked attacks.

On Sunday, a rottweiler killed a silky terrier during a dog event at the East Coast Park. The muzzle had reportedly been removed from the rottweiler to let it drink water, while the smaller dog had been unleashed to let it take part in an activity.

The AVA said the 18 trainers had applied in its first window of application, which closed last Friday. The list of approved names will be published on its website on Sept 13.

Fun dog walk goes awry as Rottweiler kills Silky terrier

SINGAPORE - It was to have been a happy event for dog enthusiasts, but things turned awry when a 40kg Rottweiler snapped at a 4.3kg Silky Terrier, killing it almost instantly.

The incident happened on Sunday(21 Aug 11) at the annual national dog walk at East Coast Park.

According to The Straits Times, the four-year-old Rottweiler, owned by plastic surgeon Dr J.J. Chua had been unmuzzled to drink some water on a very hot day. At the same time, the owner of the smaller dog, Ms Joreen Yeo, had let her own dog off leash as they were about to take part in a ball-throwing event that happened at 1pm.

But the owners have different versions of what happened, and are blaming each other for the smaller dog's death.

Dr Chua claimed that the three-year-old terrier had charged at him and bit him on his inner right arm as he was sitting on a stool holding on to his dog, Popeye, which was leashed. His own dog then bit the terrier, Honey, which Dr Chua said 'is his natural instinct'.

Ms Yeo, however, is certain that her dog would not bite anyone. She also wants to know why the Rottweiler was unmuzzled in a crowded place.

Ms Yeo carried her dog to the veterinarian on duty, but was told it had died.

Dr Chua then rushed her and the terrier to Mount Pleasant Animal Clinic in East Coast Road, but it was futile.

The event, which had Foreign and Law Minister K. Shanmugam as guest of honour, carried on as planned.

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) said it is investigating the case.

Trainers who handle dangerous dogs must now be accredited

Dog trainers who handle dogs which are deemed potentially dangerous by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) will now have to be accredited.

The Panel for the Accreditation of Dog Trainers (PADT) will recognise trainers who have completed a training syllabus focusing on obedience and social interaction.

AVA's Chief Executive Officer, Ms Tan Poh Hong, said that the training will help to ensure that owners can maintain control of their pets and that the dogs do not behave aggressively in public.

"It is important that dog owners are considerate of others and ensure that their pets are well behaved, especially in our dense urban environment.

"Although compulsory training by AVA-accredited dog trainers is only required for potentially dangerous dogs, I encourage all dog owners to send their pet dogs for basic obedience training."

Under Singapore law, any newly licensed dog of a breed which falls under the Second Schedule will have to undergo basic obedience training by an AVA-accredited trainer.

Breeds that come under the Second Schedule include the bull terrier, doberman pinscher, rottweiler, German Shepherd and its related breeds, as well as mastiffs.

Any crosses between the listed breeds are also included in the Second Schedule.

Under this new scheme, dog trainers are eligible to apply for accreditation if they have been active in training dogs, preferably large breeds, for the last 2 years.

This should be verifiable with a minimum of 6 references.

They should also be able to conduct classes according to the training syllabus for accreditation.

The panel may assess them individually.

STOMPer Yvonne's mother and her dog were viciously attacked by a stray cat lurking around Block 216 of Tampines Street 23 on Thursday (Aug 4) when they were taking a walk.

Yesterday (Aug 5), a STOMPer wrote in saying that the feeding of stray cats and pigeons is causing a rat problem in Clementi.

The STOMPer recounted:

"I like to share a horrifying incident that happened to my mother and my dog, in the hopes that all dog owners will be more careful and that people should minimize the feeding of stray cats.

"This incident happened on the evening of Aug 4 at the void deck of Blk 216 of Tampines St 23.

"My mother was walking the dog when she spotted a stray cat approaching fast from a distance.

"Realizing the intention of the stray cat, she quickly carried my dog into her arms, but her reaction was not quick enough and the stray cat attacked my dog.

"My mother pushed the stray cat away, but it did not want to give up and viciously attacked my mother.

"A lady, feeding the stray cats, came to my mother's aid only after hearing her constant cries for help.

"Please find attached the image of what happened to them and the pain they had to endure.

"This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred -- the first time, my dog was saved from the attack.

"Other dog owners have faced same thing as well."

A former pet farm operator who failed to provide adequate food and veterinary attention to his dogs was fined a total of $50,000 on Wednesday. -- PHOTO: LAU FOOK KONG

A FORMER pet farm operator who failed to provide adequate food and veterinary attention to his dogs was fined a total of $50,000 on Wednesday.

Benny Neo Terh Thong, 31, pleaded guilty to 10 of 15 charges of allowing the animals to suffer unnecessarily at The Pet Hotel at Pasir Ris Farmway 2 on or before April 15 last year (2010).

The court heard that the offences came to light when Neo decided to give up the dog-breeding business.

Mr Derrick Tan Kah Heng, who has taken over the care of more than 75 dogs at the farm together with volunteers, informed the Agri-Veterinary Authority in April last year that several dogs were in bad shape.

Six dogs needed immediate attention and were sent to the veterinarian.

He could have been fined up to $10,000 and/or jailed for up to 12 months on each charge.

There will be no dry eyes when it comes to a decision about your pet’s future when you have been offered to take up employment in Singapore. Below cons have to be considered as reasons not to take the pet along:

The pet is older than 10 years
If a pet is older than ten years, some countries require a confirmation of health and a letter of indemnity to the quarantine provider as at this age a strenuous flight and quarantine may be fatal.

The pet has a serious health problem
During quarantine the normal care a pet needs is very much reduced to the basics and health problems can aggravate a situation which is easily under control when the pet is in your care. Quarantine providers are not a care giving institution (even if they provide vet services!) but are there to minimize the risk of contagious diseases entering a country via an animal.

The breed is used to temperate conditions
A pet owner needs to consider the impact of the tropical climate on the health of the pet. Your pet may turn very lethargic from the heat and even become sick.
A breed equipped for arctic subzero temperatures does not live well in the tropics with permanent temperatures of above 30°C! (90° F) and will suffer tremendously. A dog’s life in an air-conditioned home with no chance to roam outside freely is a poor life. Breeds suitable for a normal climate will generally adjust within 4 -6 weeks.

Asians are not as affectionate with pets as Westerners.
Muslim Asians consider dogs to be impure and do not want to come close to them.

Pet’s Freedom
The freedom of your pet may be severely restricted also in view of the heat and some dangerous or unhealty animals (snakes, poisonous spiders, bugs) your pet is not used to.
Dog-sitter or kennel costs can mount, as you cannot take your dog along with you, especially when traveling or on home-leave.

STOMPer Roy saw this old man with a dog at the back of his motorcycle near Tuas Checkpoint at about 10am today (May 29). He wonders if it safe for dogs to be riding on motorcycles like that.

Said the STOMPer:

"I happened to see an old man riding a motorbike with his dog.

"It was amazing on how the dog managed to balance during the turns.

"But does it endanger the dog if the uncle lets the dog ride on his motorcycle like this?"

The Mutiara Rini Dog Shelter Story

Mutiara Rini Dog Shelter is where strays call home. Exploited once by it's caretaker for monetary gains, and abused by her, a group of animal lovers from Singapore and Malaysia rescued the shelter.

The dogs here are malnourished, forced to eat once a day by it's previous caretaker. Some are dying with infectious skins diseases and all sort of ailments.

Picking up where the caretaker left off, Rain Kooh, a dedicated animal lover and her friends are helping out as much as they can.

They still need to sustain a constant flow of donations for the dogs there for their veterinary costs and they food as well. Please watch this video and listen to the dog's plea for help.

Two men driving a van were forced to kneel for one hour with a dead poodle after they ran the dog over in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province on Sunday, local news portal scol.com reported.

According to witnesses, the dog owner asked for 5,000 yuan (S$977.80) in compensation and refused to let them go.

The dog owner said he bought the dog for 4,000 yuan and added 1,000 yuan for feeding expenses.

After learning that the two didn't have enough money, the owner demanded they kneel for one hour.

"He kicked the driver on the leg and then the driver knelt down, and the other man followed suit," said a witness surnamed Guan.

Police were called, but the dog owner and the driver told them they had already made a deal.

Another witness said it was so cold out that her husband tried to persuade the drivers to get up but they refused.

One hour later, the owner took away his dog and the drivers stood up and drove away.

The incident took place at a busy intersection. "The poodle came out of nowhere, so sudden that the driver probably had no idea what was going on," a witness said.

The news has sparked a hot discussion on the Internet, with many netizens finding it outrageous.

Some said the dog owner should also be held responsible for his dog's death, some said he was overbearing and offensive, and some said it was an incident of nuts meeting nerds.

Yan Guoya, a lawyer, said it was a demoralizing incident, and that the van drivers could ask for an apology or something to safeguard their legal rights by law.

Python crushes cat to death at Bukit Panjang

A python killed a cat at Saujana Road in Bukit Panjang yesterday (June 13). The python was coiled around the dead cat when police arrived to capture it. Blood was visible around the dead cat's mouth.

STOMPer Mathana sent in these pictures and says:

"A python was sighted at Block 416, Saujana Road yesterday (June 13) at about 1am.

"It had actually killed a cat and was about to eat it when it was captured by the police.

"The police had some difficulty luring it into the net as it was slithering around scaring onlookers.

"Finally it was captured and brought to the police car.

STOMP understands that the python, which can grow to over 8m long, is common in Singapore, and feeds on small animals like rats, birds and even cats and dogs.

Reticulated pythons are not venomous, and kill their prey through constriction.

THEY are not your average pedigree pooches on leashes that you see on the street.

Rare dog breeds – such as Alaskan Klee Kais, Salukis and greyhounds – are slowly becoming a hit with professionals, who choose them as pets for their unique looks and temperaments. They come with hefty price tags, too, with some going for as much as $8,000.

Pet’s Station chief executive Alex Chua said that rare breeds command a higher price, and not all Singaporeans are willing to pay for them.

Three proud owners of rare breeds said their hearts overruled their wallets in their decisions to buy their canine companions.

One owner, executive film producer Calvin Tan, 50, has a four-year-old Alaskan Klee Kai, which he bought when it was a puppy. The breed, prized for its rarity, is a miniature version of the Alaskan husky.

He said: “I fell in love with it immediately and bought it. It was fated.”

The Alaskan Klee Kai was developed in the 1970s by a breed developer in the United States, and was officially recognised by the American Rare Breed Association in 1995.

Administrative executive Carole Teo, 35, said she chose the Saluki as she has two children, aged five and 10. Of the five such dogs she now owns, she said: “The dog must be generally kid-friendly and not aggressive.”

She first encountered the Saluki – and was struck by its beauty – while flipping through a book on dog breeds.

While strutting with a prized pooch might turn heads, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals executive director Deirdre Moss stressed that commitment to look after the dog should be paramount.

She said: “Many buy dogs not only on impulse, but also due to a breed’s novelty. They should be aware that some dogs may require more care.”

Veterinarian Nandini Mudeliar, 30, told my paper that individual breeds have their peculiarities.

For instance, deep-chested dog breeds like the greyhound are prone to suffering from twisted intestines. She added that huskies, which are native to cold climates, need to be taken on walks in the evenings – when it is cooler – so that their tolerance for heat can be built up slowly.

Those who want to import pets from abroad are required to first obtain an import licence from the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority “within 30 days prior” to their pets’ arrival.

SHE came as the character Alice from Lewis Caroll's Alice In Wonderland and her schnauzer was dressed up as a miniature Mad Hatter. Her husband and his Scottish terrier came decked out in matching red kilts.

Ms Tracy Wee, 29, and Dr Chris Lim, 40, were among the 15 animal lovers who took part in the "Two Of A Kind" contest at East Coast Park on Sunday where pet owners and pets dressed up in matching outfits. The contest was one of five held as part of the annual Pets Corner Event organised by CATS, a part of the marketing division of Singapore Press Holdings.

Said Dr Lim: "It's a fun event. We like to dress up and see other contestants' outfits.

"It's also a day out for the dogs, with some excitement thrown in."

Although the contest was open to all kinds of pets, all the contestants turned up with dogs. There was a cowgirl, Snow White and a bumblebee, all with their dogs in matching costumes. Dr Lim said he and his wife have more than 100 outfits - which cost between $20 and $100 each - for their dogs.

"They are living things too. It's just like spending money on ourselves," he said.

"They don't leave home without some clothes on."

Ms Wee, a freelance graphic designer, eventually won third prize in the contest, walking away with a $150 pet shop voucher, a bronze medal and a goodie bag. This year marks the third time the couple have participated in this annual event.

Their dogs take part in about four contests each year but they are not all about beauty. One of the contests the dogs took part in was to pick the one that could eat the fastest.

Dr Lim, who has four dogs, four guinea pigs and three rabbits, said he won a prize last year: "My guinea pig was dressed as a character from G-Force."

The theme of that contest was Super Heroes By The Beach. Ms Tay Aisan, a housewife in her 30s, won the second prize on Sunday.

She and her dog won $100 cash, a $50 pet shop voucher, a silver medal and a goodie bag. Ms Gayathiri, a 20-year-old vet nurse, and her Shetland shepherd bagged the top prize comprising $200 cash and a gold medal along with the $50 voucher and the goodie bag.

Ms Tay and her two-year-old Italian greyhound, Charlotte, wore identical Snow White costumes. She had bought the US$20 (S$25) costume for Charlotte while she was living in the US, but had to hand-make her own outfit.

"I bought the base and sewed on the patterns. You can see up close the stitching isn't very well done," she said with a laugh.

Exciting

While she was slightly embarrassed about her get-up, she was excited about participating in the event.

"There are not many outlets for dogs. It's good for people to come to these events to learn about the different breeds and socialise with the dogs," she said.

The event was a must-go for dog lover Debbie Mok, 40. Never mind that her nine-year-old pomeranian, Trouble, had trouble getting around. The dog had a slipped disc over the Chinese New Year and needed wheels attached to its hind legs to aid its movement.

Ms Mok, an executive in the recycling industry, said: "I brought him here because he loves to be out at the beach. For the past five or six years, we would go to Sentosa every Saturday. I had to stop taking him after he got injured.

"Trouble and I are best friends."

Apart from the contests, there were also more than 20 booths manned by pet merchants and animal welfare organisations offering everything from pet food to pet insurance.

Lions and lambs. Birds and worms. Dogs and cats. There are some combinations of animals, which left to their own devices, just don't mix. This is especially true if both species like to lounge in your living room. (Hopefully you've realized we're zeroing in on dogs and cats here, and don't have a roaring/bleating situation on your hands.)

After all, it's only natural that dogs chase cats, right? Not necessarily. With proper socialization, dogs and cats can live in harmony. In fact, they may even become what we'd consider "friends." Still, it pays to stack the odds in your favor, so we've put together a line-up of "most likely to succeed" dogs. Which breeds made our top 10? Find out, beginning on the next page.

10: Pomeranian

They may look like little balls of fur, but Pomeranians are 3 to 7 pounds (1.36 to 3 kilograms) of sheer confidence -- a trait that makes them well equipped to befriend an equally cocky cat. The Pomeranian's ancestors were once four times the breed's current standard size and were used primarily to herd sheep or pull sleds. Today, the diminutive breed is known for its loyal, active personality with the intelligence to match. This is a combination that easily takes to training -- especially positive reinforcement -- and just one of several reasons the breed made our cat-friendly list. The Pomeranian (whose coat can be any color or pattern, but seems to most often sport orange or red) is an ideal small dog to have as a cat's housemate. Even if the two don't become fast friends, the Pom can be trained to offer companionable respect. Now that's a match made in heaven.

9: Shih Tzu

How could a cat not love these dogs? We sure do. Shih Tzus are tranquil, devoted and highly adaptable. But don't mistake these dogs for proverbial doormats. Their personalities outmatch their diminutive size and they have a persistent arrogant streak that may require extra time and attention -- especially if your goal is peace between Shih Tzus and cats. Shih Tzus respond well to metered discipline, especially when it's consistent and applied to even small infractions (this saves a lot of trouble down the road because it prevents little problems from becoming nasty little habits). With training, they develop a mutual understanding and respect with a feline companion. Plus, at just 9 to 16 pounds (4 to 7 kilograms), your cat may end up being the larger of the two.

8: Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a big dog in a little package. These up to 6-pound (2.7-kilogram) dynamos are confident, self-reliant and likely to challenge a dog four times their size. Fortunately, even with their terrier-like attitudes, Chihuahuas make good companions for felines. As anyone who has ever watched a Chihuahua and cat become friends must surely know, the two seem to enjoy sharing the same space -- and will even curl up together for a nap. As with most dogs, it's best if a Chihuahua and cat are introduced while still young, preferably before their first birthdays. Even if your Chihuahua is older, he could still be trained to respect a cat rather than give chase. Just make sure the cat does the same. A Chihuahua can weigh as little as 2 pounds (.9 kilograms); the cat may just tower over him.

7: Maltese

The Maltese is undeniably good-looking. She has silky white hair that if not trimmed flows to the floor, a charming little face accentuated by dark, expressive eyes and a black button nose. Weighing about 6 pounds (2.72 kilograms), the Maltese makes a perfect lapdog. But these aren't the only reasons she's on our cat-friendly list. The Maltese is a smart little dog that loves to please, and this makes her a fast learner (so even if your cat can't figure out that running away will make just about any dog give chase, the Maltese can be trained to take the high road). Plus, the Maltese is quite gentle-mannered in the first place, allowing her to become a companion -- rather than a threat -- to equally beloved felines. It's a win/win situation.

6: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

These dogs seem like the very definition of "lap dog." The Cavalier King Charles spaniel, a member of the English toy spaniel breed, evolved from similar dogs favored by English royalty -- especially King Charles II, who reigned in the 17th century. He always had a spaniel by his side (and even decreed they be allowed in public places, like Parliament). It's no wonder the breed bears his name. The Cavalier King Charles spaniel (or Cav) is quick to learn tricks, obey its human companion and cuddle with anyone who sits still for even a moment. Cat lovers will be especially pleased to discover the Cav has a penchant for smaller creatures. These spaniels weigh only 13 to 18 pounds (5.8 to 8.1 kilograms) and easily bow to the wishes of a household cat if introduced to this long-tailed leader as a puppy. Although the Cav and reigning cat often develop a mutual respect, it's not uncommon to find the two playing, particularly if the cat is an outgoing and good-natured creature.

5: Boston Terrier

These lively dogs can be trained to give a cat ample space. That's just one reason the Boston terrier, also known as the "all-American dog" is one of our top cat-friendly picks. These intelligent dogs with distinctive black-and-white markings weigh anywhere from 10 to 25 pounds (4.5 to 11.3 kilograms) and are easy to train, in large part because of their intelligence and determination. As the name suggests, this breed was developed in Boston, Mass., following the Civil War as a fighting dog. By 1891, it officially became known as the Boston terrier. Most cats, however, simply know them as "buddy."

4: Chinese Crested

The Chinese Crested is an elegant dog that's just 12 inches (30.48 centimeters) tall at the shoulder, bringing him eye-to-eye with many cats. The largely hairless dogs (except for a long crest on the neck and head, the lower legs and tail) are soft and smooth to the touch. A variation, known as the "powderpuff," features an allover coat of soft, straight hair. What cat lovers may appreciate most about the Chinese Crested, however, is his loving, playful personality. One that's just right for living with a cat or two. In fact, because the Chinese Crested can sometimes be naturally timid, it may just be the cat you have to watch out for. Generally, though, the Chinese Crested will befriend the companions he lives with over time -- cats and all.

3: Shetland Sheepdog

They may look like miniature versions of the Border collie, but Shetland sheepdogs have a personality all their own. They stand only 13 to 16 inches (33 to 40.6 centimeters) at the shoulder, but have an alert and intelligent disposition. This makes them especially responsive to their owners and to consistent training attempts. Shelties are adept at everything from basic obedience to agility, and can readily understand any command that amounts to "don't chase the cat." In fact, the loyal affection these herding dogs show their owners is matched only by their tolerance and patience when faced with smaller species like cats-- particularly if initially supervised to make sure the friendship get off on the right paw.

2: Japanese Chin

Bred as companions, it's easy to see why a Japanese Chin would become fast friends with their human -- or even a cat their human also happens to love. The Japanese Chin actually originated in China, and spent much of its time warming the laps of Chinese aristocracy or accompanying royal ladies in their comings and goings. As the breed's popularity grew throughout the Far East, the dogs were gifted to traveling dignitaries -- signifying what a treasure the Japanese Chin had become to the Far East. The Japanese Chin continues to be a treasure today, and is an affectionate (if not occasionally reserved) breed with an even temperament that can adapt to dynamic households, including playful kittens or adult cats.

1: Bichon Frise

There's much to love about the Bichon Frise. They're cheerful, playful and gentle -- all great qualities in a companion dog. At up to 12 pounds (5.4 kilograms) and 11.5 inches (29.2 centimeters) in height, this powder-puff of a dog is a perfectly packaged compadre. And that goes for cats, too. When raised together, a Bichon and a housecat can become fast friends, playing and wrestling like siblings. Even if introduced later in life, the two can learn to get along if the cat isn't especially aggressive or flighty. Small dogs like the Bichon Frise are especially likely to be harmed by cat claws; most dogs won't chase a cat that doesn't run. By employing a consistent brand of positive reinforcement, even reluctant Bichons can be trained to tolerate cats.

These Dogs don't like Cats. There are exceptions to every rule, but high-energy, prey-driven dogs are more likely to see your cat as a snack or entertainment than a buddy. Steer clear of terriers, which include Jack Russells, and sighthounds, which include greyhounds. They're more likely to terrorize a cat than befriend it.

White tiger's tail inflamed due to too much licking, says Zoo company

A white tiger at the Singapore Zoo caused its tail to be inflamed when it licked it excessively during grooming. Wildlife Reserves Singapore, the parent company of Singapore Zoo, said this in response to an article in STOMP about the injured animal.

While grooming and licking is normal feline behaviour, excessive licking can cause inflammation of the skin.

The female tiger, Winnie, was first spotted by STOMPer Tina during her visit to the zoo last Saturday (Mar 5). She later sent in photos of the injured animal to STOMP.

In its reply, Wildlife Reserves Singapore said:

"Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) refers to the photo submitted to STOMP Singapore, 'Poor Thing! White tiger with injured tail spotted' by Stomper Tina on 6 March 2011.

"The tip portion of the female white tiger’s tail was exposed due to overgrooming and excessive licking of her fur over a period of time.

"The abrasive nature of her tongue also caused the skin to become raw and pink.

"The tiger, Winnie, had started licking her tail about two weeks ago which resulted in the fur loss.

"This is normal feline behaviour as grooming is comforting for a cat.

"However, excessive licking can cause inflammation of the skin and cause it to over granulate.

"The condition is expected to heal and the fur to grow back after some topical treatment by WRS vets.

"The vets are currently treating her tail with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and topical sprays to prevent further inflammation of the skin.

"We will continue to monitor her condition and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

"We thank STOMP writer Tina for her concern regarding Winnie."

S'pore sees increase in demand for exotic game meat

SINGAPORE: The demand for exotic game meat has doubled over two years.

Owners of game meat stores said the increase is due to the presence of more Chinese nationals in Singapore who enjoy eating the exotic meat more than the locals.

One local farmer who breeds his own game meat said 6 out of 10 customers are from China.

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority allows the import of exotic game meat like rabbit, pigeon, quail, squab and wild guinea fowl.

But game meat is not common in Singapore.

The Restaurant Association of Singapore said less than 10 per cent of restaurants under the organisation sell game meat.

AVA investigating alleged case of restaurant selling dog meat

SINGAPORE : The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) is investigating an alleged case of a restaurant selling dog meat to patrons.

It has taken samples for testing to ascertain the type of meat used.

The Internet has been abuzz with comments of an eatery - identified as Song Hua Jiang Restaurant - located at Jurong East Avenue 1 featuring dog meat in its menu.

One of its dishes was apparently described as containing "braised dog meat, tofu and cabbage".

AVA said in a statement that under the law, meat can only be imported from AVA-approved sources which have met public health and food safety standards.

Authorities also ensure that local slaughter houses meet standards of safety and welfare in the treatment and handling of live animals for slaughter.

AVA said it accepts only internationally humane methods and "there is no known humane methods of slaughtering dogs for human consumption".

It added there are also no premises licensed for the slaughter of dogs in Singapore.

Anyone caught illegally slaughtering animals for human consumption or importing dog meat could be fined up to S$10,000 and jailed up to 12 months.

S'pore restaurant sells braised dog meat: Legal or not? Where do they get the meat?

At first glance, what this restaurant serves looks like typical Chinese fare. However, STOMPer EDMWer was surprised to see one item offered on the menu is braised dog meat. Is this legal, he questions, and where do they get the meat from?

EDMWer wrote in his email (May 9):

"Dog meat for sale in Singapore.

"This 'China-nese'-run restaurant is selling dog meat.

"Is it legal?

"Did the authorities approve of dog meat imports?"

STOMP understands that the Chinese restaurant, located at Jurong East, is part of a chain of restaurants which originated in China and purportedly serves authentic Dong Bei cuisine.

Eatery employee claimed dog meat is legal in S'pore, says animal advocate group

A female employee of the restaurant which listed 'braised dog meat' on its menu 'rudely and arrogantly' told netizens that they did sell dog meat and it is legal to do so here, said an animal advocate group.

News of the 'dog meat' eatery was first sent in by STOMPer EDMWer who was surprised and questioned its legality. The AVA (Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority) later took samples from the restaurant to conduct an investigation.

The restaurant owner had claimed the meat was actually pork, and tests of the meat by the AVA also affirmed this.

A spokesperson from the Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES) wrote in a statement (May 12):

"AVA has announced that following tests of the alleged dog meat, the meat is in fact pork.

"While ACRES does not doubt the test AVA conducted, we do question whether the owner provided the right samples or might have got rid of the alleged dog meat before AVA inspected the premises.

"We note that netizens had called the restaurant earlier and they did say they sold dog meat and even said it was legal to sell it in Singapore. Online comments include:

"1. Before news of this eatery went viral, I called up (it was listed as 'Song Hua Jiang TRADING' in the yellowpages) at about 12 noon on Sunday and the lady on the other end (a Chinese national), rudely and arrogantly told me that, yes, of course they sell dog meat! And of course it’s legal in Singapore!

"2. I called up and asked if they sell dog meat. The lady on the phone arrogantly told me in Chinese that Singapore can sell dog meat, what!

"Based solely on the AVA tests, the restaurant clearly cheated their customer since they had listed the dish as 'dog meat' on the menu.

"ACRES has written to AVA and NEA and urged them to prosecute the restaurant under Section 17 of The Sale of Food Act, which states: 'No person shall sell any food which is labelled or advertised in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive or is likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its value, merit or safety'.

"Real or fake, the restaurant should not have promoted dog meat in Singapore and should be prosecuted."

Today is Mother's day. our whole family are celebrating it.

Pet dog's death at AVA centre raises worrying questions

MY DOG escaped from our yard on Wednesday after he found a small hole in the fence of our new premises. Luckily (so I thought) he was found by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) on the same day, and the staff informed me the next morning.

When I visited AVA's Centre for Animal Welfare and Control immediately, I was advised to wait as my dog needed to be micro-chipped. I was also told that my dog would not allow anyone to touch him as he was very scared.

I offered to calm him down and hold him while they did the procedure, but the staff opted to do it themselves.

Five minutes later, I was escorted into a room where they told me that my dog had to be forcefully restrained by the neck and when they finished, he had collapsed and died.

I never got to see him, only his lifeless body. While my family is grief-stricken and my children inconsolable, the attitude of the AVA staff was business as usual.

Who polices the activities at the AVA centre? Is there care and compassion, and proper facilities, and are staff trained to handle terrified dogs?

Perhaps this is one reason for a public perception that calls for changes to conditions at puppy mills and for the humane treatment of strays have fallen on deaf ears.

The AVA offered to do a post-mortem on the dog and we are waiting to see what the results are.

Our jie jies enter us into Club Pets Cover Search 2011 contest so that's our purpose of visiting Fort Canning today for a nice photo shoot by the professional photographer,Lundy.

our jie jies took us there earlier then the appointed photo shoot time to get us warmed up and familiarise with the place... along the way,our jie jie took some photos of us too!!!

Description	A sturdy, tough terrier, very much on its toes all the time. The body length must be in proportion to the height, and it should present a compact, balanced image, always being in solid, hard condition. The head should be well balanced and in proportion to the body. The skull should be flat, of moderate width at the ears, narrowing to the eyes. There should be a defined stop, which is the transition area from backskull to muzzle, but not overpronounced. The length of the muzzle from the nose to the stop should be slightly shorter than the distance from the stop to the occiput. The nose should be black. The jaw should be powerful and well boned with strongly muscled cheeks. Eyes Should be almond shaped, dark in color and full of life and intelligence. The ears are small "V" shaped drop ears carried forward close to the head and of moderate thickness. Mouth Strong teeth with the top slightly overlapping the lower. Two bites are acceptable; level and scissor - scissor being preferred. The neck is clean and muscular, of good length, gradually widening at the shoulders. The shoulders should be sloping and well laid back, fine at points and clearly cut at the withers. Forelegs should be strong and straight boned with joints in correct alignment. Elbows hanging perpendicular to the body and working free of the sides. The chest should be shallow, narrow and the front legs not too widely apart, giving an athletic, rather than heavily chested appearance. As a guide only, the chest should be small enough to be easily spanned behind the shoulders, by average sized hands, when the terrier is in a fit, working condition. The back should be strong, straight and, in comparison to the height of the terrier, give a balanced image. The loin should be slightly arched. The hindquarters should be strong and muscular, well put together with good angulation and bend of stifle, giving plenty of drive and propulsion. Looking from behind, the hocks must be straight. The feet are round, hard padded, wide, of cat-like appearance, neither turning in nor out. The tail should be set rather high, carried gaily and in proportion to body length, usually about four inches long, providing a good hand-hold. The coat is smooth, without being so sparse as not to provide a certain amount of protection from the elements and undergrowth. Rough or broken coated, without being woolly. Colors, white should predominate (i.e., must be more than 51% white) with tan, black, or brown markings. Brindle markings are unacceptable. Gait movement should be free, lively, well coordinated with straight action in front and behind. Old scars or injuries, the result of work or accident, should not be allowed to prejudice a terrier's chance in the show ring unless they interfere with its movement or with its utility for work or stud. An Irish-type called Jack Russell Shortys have shorter legs than the English-type.
Temperament	The Jack Russell Terrier is a cheerful, merry, devoted, and loving dog. Spirited and obedient, yet absolutely fearless. Careful and amusing, he enjoys games and playing with toys. Stable Jack's are friendly and generally kind to children. Children should be taught not to tease or hit the dog. They are intelligent, and if you let them take an inch, they can become willful and determined to take a mile. It is paramount that you are this dogs pack leader. He needs to be given rules to follow, and limitations as to what he is and is not allowed to do. Do not let this little dog fall into Small Dog Syndrome, where he believes he is pack leader to all humans. This is where varying degrees of behavior problems will arise, including, but not limited to guarding, snapping, separation anxiety, and obsessive barking. They are highly trainable, able to perform impressive tricks. They have been used on TV and in the movies. However, if you do not show authority towards the dog , they can be difficult to train. They need a firm, experienced trainer. Jacks who have been allowed to take over can be aggressive with other dogs. Some have killed or been killed in dog fights. Be sure to socialize the Jack. They have strong hunting instincts (stronger than your average terrier) and should not be trusted with other small animals. This hunting dog likes to chase, explore, bark and dig. Only let them off lead if they are well trained or in a safe area. Will get restless and destructive if they do not receive enough exercise and activities to occupy their keen minds. Jack Russells climb, which means they can climb over a fence, they also jump. A Jack that stands 12 inches high can easily jump five feet. JRTs are not the breed for a inexperienced dog owner. The owner needs to be as strong-willed as they are, or this little guy will take over. With the right owner the Jack can really excel, but is not recommended for those who do not understand what it means to be a dogs true pack leader. Jacks who are mentally stable, with all of their canine instincts met, will not display these negative behaviors. They are not traits of the Jack Russell, but rather human brought on behaviors, which are a result of inefficient leadership, along with a lack of mental and physical stimulation. They will thrive with a job to do. The Jack Russell Terrier must present a lively, active and alert appearance. It should impress with its fearless and happy disposition. It should be remembered that the Jack Russell is a working terrier and should retain these instincts. Nervousness, cowardice or over-aggressiveness should be discouraged and it should always appear confident.

Health Problems	Some are prone to dislocation of the kneecaps, inherited eye diseases, deafness, Legg Perthes-a disease of the hip joints of small breeds of dogs.
Living Conditions	The Jack Russell Terrierwill do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. They are very active indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard.
Exercise	The Jack Russell Terrier is a pleasant companion when it is sufficiently exercised; however if they do not get enough, they may become a nuisance. They need to be taken on a long, daily, brisk walk. In addition, he will be in his glory with space to run, hunt and play. If the Jack is left alone during the day be it in an appartment or a house, they should be well exercised before the human leaves for work by taking them on a long pack walk or jog, and then taken out again when they return home.
Life Expectancy	About 15 or more years.
Grooming	All coat types are easy to groom. Comb and brush regularly with a firm bristle brush, and bathe only when necessary. To show, owners must strip the coat. Like the rough coat, the broken coated Jack needs to be stripped out also.
Origin	The breed was named after a clergyman named Rev. John Russell. They were used as a small game hunting dog particularly for red fox, digging the quarry out of its den in the mid-1800s. On English hunts, the dogs needed to be long-legged enough to keep up with the hounds. Breeders had emphasized its working ability, so the standard was very broad, allowing a wide range of accepted body types. Not happy with this wide variety of working type Jacks, as of April 1st 2003 the Jack Russell Terrier Association of America, was changed to the Parson Russell Terrier Association of America. The working types remained Jack Russels while the American show types became known as the Parson Russell Terrier. Some of the Jack Russell's talents include: hunting, tracking, agility, and performing tricks.

The Parsons are the long legged Jack Russell Terriers named officially Parsons Russell Terriers. The Jack Russell Terrier and the Russell Terrier are the same breed but are entirely a separate breed from the Parsons Russell Terrier. The Irish Kennel Club has recognized the Jack Russell Terrier in Ireland adopting the FCI standard for the breed. At one time the AKC recognized the Jack Russel Terrier, however as of April 1st 2003 they changed the name to Parson Russel Terrier. The breed split into two breeds and now the Jack Russell Terriers and Parson Russell Terriers are considered two different breeds. The Parson's name change is in great part to a lawsuit from the JRTCA to the AKC, when the breed was first allowed registration.

Description	The Maltese is a small, hardy dog with silky hair. The body is compact, fine-boned, but sturdy and slightly longer than it is tall with a level top line. The chest is deep. The skull is slightly rounded on the top with a moderate stop. The medium length muzzle tapers, but not to a point. The pendant, low-set ears are set close to the head and heavily feathered. The black eyes are large, round and set moderately apart with dark rims. The nose is black with open nostrils. The dog has a silky, single layer coat that is white or light ivory. When kept long and groomed like a show dog, it hangs flat, long over the sides of the body almost to the ground (about 8½ inches (22cm.)) hanging on each side of a center part line and is not wavy, curly or kinky. A lot of owners choose to cut the coat into a short, easy care puppy cut.
Temperament	The Maltese is spirited, lively and playful. Gentle, loving, trusting and devoted to its master. Highly intelligent. Good at learning tricks. Bold and quick to sound the alarm in case of suspicious noises. It is a classical companion dog; graceful and lovable. They do well with other non-canine animals and other dogs. Maltese love to play outdoors. Some like to jump in puddles. May be difficult to housebreak. If you feed them table scraps, they can become picky eaters. Do not allow these dogs to develop Small Dog Syndrome, human induced behaviors, where the dog believes he is pack leader to humans. This causes a varying degree of behavior problems. If the dog believes he is boss, he can be snappish with children and even adults. Do not over-pamper or overprotect these little dogs, for they will become unstable, and some may become jealous of visitors. Maltese who are allowed to take over the house, being boss of the humans can also develop separation anxiety, guarding, and obsessive barking. These are not Maltese traits, but rather behaviors brought on by the way the dog is treated by the people around them. These behaviors will go away when the dog is surrounded by stable pack leaders.

Feeding dry dog biscuits in addition to their normal food can help the teeth stay clean and healthy.
Living Conditions	The Maltese is a good dog for apartment life. They are very active indoors and will do okay without a yard.
Exercise	Maltese need a daily walk. Play will take care of a lot of their exercise needs, however, as with all breeds, play will not fulfill their primal instinct to walk. Dogs who do not get to go on daily walks are more likely to display behavior problems. They will also enjoy a good romp in a safe open area off lead, such as a large fenced in yard. They remain playful well into old age. They are very active indoors.
Life Expectancy	About 15 or more years. It may live as long as 18, but it is important to keep it out of the damp.
Grooming	Daily combing and brushing of the long coat is important but be gentle, as the coat is very soft. Clean the eyes daily to prevent staining, and clean the beard after meals for the same reason. Bathe or dry shampoo regularly - making sure the animal is thoroughly dry and warm afterward. Clean the ears, and pull out hair growing inside the ear canal. The eyes should be checked regularly and cleaned if necessary. The hair on the top of the head is often tied up in a topknot to keep it away from the eyes. Some pet owners opt to clip the hair short for easier and less time consuming grooming. The Maltese sheds little to no hair and is good for allergy sufferers.
Origin	The Maltese was developed in Italy. It is said to have miniature spaniel and poodle blood. The Maltese was first recognized as a breed in Malta, where they received their name. They were once known as "Ye ancient dogge of Malta,". The breed was owned by royalty all over the world. Women carried them around in their sleeves and slept with them in their beds. They were first brought to England by Crusaders returning home from the Mediterranean. The Maltese was first recognized by the AKC in 1888.

Description	The long-haired coat of the Japanese Spitz has a thick under-layer that is always pure white. The tail is covered with long hair and is carried curled over the back. The coat is short on the bottom half of the legs, with breeches on the hind legs and feathering on the forelegs. The ears are small and pointed upright, and the muzzle tapers slightly. The large oval eyes are dark and slightly slanted, and the nose and lips are black. The face of the Japanese Spitz is wedge-shaped. There is dense feathering on the feet.
Temperament	The Japanese Spitz is a high-spirited, intelligent, and playful dog, which is alert and obedient. This bold little dog is a good watchdog and will alert its owners when it feels it is necessary. The Japanese Spitz is not difficult to train as long as the owner is always consistent. This breed learns quickly and really enjoys agility and playing games of catch with balls or Frisbees. This happy dog is usually good with children and usually gets along well with other dogs and household pets. The Japanese Spitz is, in spirit, a big dog in a little dog's body. This tough little dog acts as a house protector and guardian. The Japanese Spitz can be an inveterate barker if you allow them to believe they are in charge. Be sure to tell your dog enough is enough and to quiet down if he starts barking obsessively. Cheerful, bold, proud and affectionate toward its masters. These are not Spitz traits, but rather behaviors resulting in a lack of leadership on the humans part. Always remember, dogs are canines, not humans. Be sure to meet their natural instincts as animals. They need rules to follow, limits to what they are and are not allowed to do and a firm, consistent, confident pack leader, along with daily mental and physical exercise.

Grooming	The Japanese Spitz should be combed and brushed regularly. This is a very tidy animal that should be bathed only when necessary. When the dog is shedding, use a comb with a double row of metal teeth to remove loose hairs from the under-layer.
Origin	No one knows for sure of the origins of the Japanese Spitz, but some claim it is descended from the native Siberian Samoyed. This theory is controversial but those who believe it claim, Samoyeds were strictly bred for smallness, with the end result being the Japanese Spitz. Everything about the Japanese Spitz strongly suggests that it is simply a small version of the Samoyed. Creation of the breed commenced in the late 1800s. Very popular in Japan in the 1950s, and although numbers in the native land have declined, it has become increasingly popular in Europe and North America.

At The Canine Fashion Show, co-organized by ION Orchard and Pet Lovers' Foundation, the model pups "catwalked" down the runway along with proud owners.

The first-ever Pets' Day Out held at ION Garden featured free doggie canapés, pet caricature and a photo-booth.

Natural Doggie Dental Care

With all the uproar from one of our readers about oral hygine and dogs I wanted to share with you the natural way to keep your dog’s and cats’s teeth clean. NO commercial dental “TREATS” needed!

It’s time to get hip to what’s going on with the teeth and gums of the animal world. Periodontal disease in particular is quite common, especially in older pets, though it is not the only dental problem animals face. Dental disease is a combination of genetics and lack of education on the part of pet owners.

Pet owners are notorious for waiting to get into the habit of dental hygiene until they are midway through their pets’ time on this earth. Dental hygiene is a hard practice to break into late in the game; not only for owners, but for the pets, (especially cats). Dental hygiene should start at the very beginning of our pet’s lives, even when their teeth look as tiny as thorns.

Due to processed commercial foods (including grain based dry dog biscuits), our dog population lately is experiencing tartar build-up and subsequent periodontal disease as one of the number one health concerns today. Carbohydrate based dry dog food actually leads to an un-natural alkaline environment in the body. The carbohydrates in the food are broken down by enzymes in the saliva and form sugars, which in turn, cause increased tartar build-up.

Periodontal disease is the number one disease that affects our pets’ mouths after they turn two years of age. Yes, you read right, two years of age! Eighty-five percent of dogs two years of age and older have periodontal disease. It’s much more insidious than the other diseases because it affects more than just the teeth and soft tissue. It can destroy all of the supporting structures of the mouth. The infection can also seep into the bloodstream affecting other parts of the body (such as the heart and liver) and making a pet ill.

Doggie Breath?

Bad breath is one of the most obvious indicators that something is wrong. Unfortunately, most pet owners are used to bad doggy or kitty breath when, in fact, bad breath is simply not normal. In the earlier stages of periodontal disease, you may be able to reverse the damage with holistic/natural care and diet. A veterinarian can also intervene with a deep dental cleaning. But, because we’ve erroneously come to almost expect bad breath, the damage in our dogs mouth continues.

A healthy canine (or feline) mouth is teaming with bacteria; most of which are normal and natural. It is important to control plaque buildup on the teeth in order to ensure most of this bacteria are healthy bacteria.

Plaque is a mixture of bacteria, saliva components, and remnants of epithelial cells and white blood cells along with some broken down food particles. It is sticky and should be removed from the teeth daily. When not removed plaque becomes tartar (or calculus) as mineral deposits and organic material build up and harden on the teeth. Tartar generally looks like a yellow-brown layer on the teeth near the gum line.

As plaque and tartar build up on the teeth, the balance of healthy bacteria is then thrown off and the opportunity for disease is just waiting to take place. As the tartar builds up under the gums they become inflamed and sore. Slowly the gums begin to separate from the teeth and recede. Plaque builds even more rapidly in the upper, softer part of the teeth and infection begins. In cats, cavities develop with even more opportunity for infection. (Dogs are less prone to cavities). The bacteria and toxins are then absorbed into the blood stream where they circulate and begin to build up in kidney, liver, and heart tissue. This is serious stuff folks! The toxins released can even affect brain tissue. The inflammatory process involved can also aggravate already deteriorating joints.

Warning Signs and Smoke Signals

Many oral diseases get out of hand due to our (humans) lack of knowledge on the subject. . Below is a chart of some warning signs for the different oral calamities so that you can treat your pet before its too late.

Doing Our Part

Oral diseases aren’t mysterious and quite simply come from neglect.
First and foremost, it’s important to check your pet’s mouth daily for signs of injury and improperly erupting teeth. Some pets enjoy having their mouths stroked. If not, slowly trrn it into a game of some sort to make it easier for yourself and for them to inspect their mouths or brush their teeth. Proper care doesn’t only entail being observant nor does it have to entail taking your pet to the vet at the slightest provocation, it means rolling up your sleeves and being active to help prevent problems in the first place.

Steps to prevention of periodontal disease:

Healthy Diet - You guessed it; a healthy diet is vital for dental health. The healthier the animal, the better the immune system. A meat based diet (perferablly raw or home cooked and rare) is essential as meat helps maintain a healthier mouth environment. God desgend our carnivorous pets to eat raw meat with the bones. If you feed exclusively a commercial diet of kibble or canned food you are just asking for trouble. The dog at your feet (or on your sofa) has been bred down from the wolf, and its digestive system is virtually the same despite thousands of years of domestication. They have very short intestinal tracts geared to the consumption and digestion of raw foods.

Commercially prepared kibble has become the standard diet for most pets in our culture. It is relatively cheap and quite convenient. Knowledgeable pet owners and many veterinarians, however, are becoming increasingly aware of the true nutritional needs of our companion canines and are taking a pro-active approach to nutrition by choosing quality of ingredients over cost and convenience. For most dogs (and cats as well), a home-prepared raw food diet is best. I know that with some, this is not always feasible, however, as a Veterinary Naturopath, Natural Pet Care Educator and Nutrition Consultant, I do my best to offer the healthiest options available for all life-styles and feeding choices. Whatever you choose to feed your pet, I hope you will put some thought into your decision because, what you do NOW will produce big rewards over his or her lifetime and very probably help him/her avoid serious and costly illnesses caused by poor nutrition and feeding practices.

Dental Exercise – Chewing on natural, God designed hard food such as raw bones and giving treats such as tendons, or bully sticks helps exercise the teeth and gums and even helps scrape off plaque, helping to prevent tartar buildup. Many will at the very least, feed chicken necks to their dogs daily, for larger breed dogs you can feed turkey necks (Remember poultry bones do not splinter when raw.) You can also give them raw marrow bones or knuckle bones (many, also give thier dogs oxtails) for healthy chewing exercise.

When I was working in veterinary clinics, we would occasionally have a raw feeder such as myself bring thier dogs in for a check up. The vets were always so surprised to see that dogs that are given plenty of raw bones rarely if ever, needed a dental cleaning! They had to admit at the very least these dogs fed a raw meaty bone diet had something right going on.

If you are not willing to at least give your pets a raw meaty bone a few times a week to clean his/her teeth then you seriously need to begin to be proactive with either brushing daily or use a doggie mouth wash, drops and/or supplements.

I can hear some of you saying, “But what about hard, dry kibble and crunchy treats?”…. Crunching kibble and dog biscuits does not qualify as dental exercise nor does it remove plaque from the teeth; as mentioned above, eating kibble and biscuits generally produces dental problems as it leaves behind small bits of food material that easily stick to the teeth and contribute to plaque buildup. (Those commercials that showed the dog eating a bone-shaped biscuit followed by a big smile with sparkling white teeth were convincing but are purely fantasy).

Greenies and other commerial, so called “dental treats” such as Greenies are ever-popular are even falsely touted as being “Smart” as well other look a likes and edible treats . Just a couple words of caution: if your companion has allergies you may want to avoid greenies and the like as they are mostly wheat gluten and some even corn based. (Be sure to see my articles on why dogs should not be fed grains). Also, they can be high in calories, so not the best treats for overweight animals either.

Doggie Teeth Brushing – If you are not feeding a raw meat and bone diet or at least supplementing with a raw reactional marrow, knuckly bone or ox tails, it is imperative you brush yoiur dog’s teeth DAILY! Many refuse to brush our pets teeth even once a week. Please, stop and think a minute here, what would be the condition our mouths if we didn’t brush our teeth regularly? The same goes for our pets. The earlier you get into the practice of brushing, the better– Use a toothbrush designed for pets with very soft bristles to avoid damaging their delicate gum tissue. For toy breed dogs, the finger toothbrush is a great alternative. It’s a device that fits over your finger and is easy to navigate through your pet’s mouth. *IMPORTANT* – Refrain from using human toothpaste toothpaste, especially if it contains sweetners or baking soda, these can upset their stomachs and some cases, the sweetners can cause death.

Mouth Wash, Drops, Supplements - Mouth washes, drops, and diet or water supplements can be a great tool in the prevention of periodontal disease when combined with brushing. They are definitely not as effective as a raw meaty bone diet or brushing, but are certainly better than no home care at all.

Supplementing with Vitamin C
Vitamin C strengthens the immune system, facilitating the destruction of the germs and microorganisms that can enhance gum disease.

CoQ10 is a potent antioxidant that can reduce inflammation in the gums, helps prevent free radicals from damaging healthy cells, supports healthy heart and immune function, neuroligical health, as well as promoting healthy gum tissue.

Echinacea
adding a few drops of Echinacea to the drinking water daily for two weeks to will help stimulate immune-cell function, slowing the progress of bacteriological invaders

Cranberries
researchers have proven that a beverage containing 25% cranberry juice inhibited bacteria from binding and accumulating on an artificial tooth by 67-85%.

Man barks at dog, says dog started it

Ryan Stephens has been charged with teasing Timber the police dog after he was found barking and hissing at the animal.

K9 fury: This b***h bites

According to a police report, Officer Bradley Walker was responding to a crash at the Mason Pub early Sunday morning when his K-9 officer, Timber, began barking.

Walker said he observed 25-year-old Ryan Stephens with his face about 2 inches from the rear window of the police vehicle, barking and hissing at Timber.

When Walker questioned Stephens about why he was barking at the dog, Stephens replied, "He started it. He was harassing me."

Walker said he believed Stephens was intoxicated because he smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred.

Stephens is to appear April 21 in municipal court on a misdemeanor citation of willfully teasing a police K-9 officer.

Walker said it's dangerous to incite the dogs while they're locked inside the vehicle.

Walker said it's also dangerous to the person doing the harassing.

"If the door was actually left unlocked or something, and a drunk individual or an intoxicated individual opens the door, he has a very good likelihood of getting bit," Walker said.

Dogs survivie Japan Quake-Hit

Even animals in Japan have touching stories to share. Watch this inspiring tale of two dogs in quake-hit Japan.

In the video, a dog refuses to leave the area, keeping vigil at a friend's side. The other dog is injured, but still alive, much to the relief of STOMPer InuPower.

According to CNN and the UK Telegraph, both dogs have been rescued, and are receiving veterinary care in the same town of Mito, Japan.

Said the STOMPer:

"This is yet another display of animal loyalty that is so touching -- and especially during this difficult time.

"Similar to these dogs, I'm sure the people are also trying their best to cope and to keep vigil at their friends' sides.

"This is a story that would not have been told, if the reporter did not notice it.

"Like the many stories of people helping others in Japan, here's one that comes from an animal friend.

"Stay strong, Japan!"

Earthquake and tsunami relief for Japan's people and pets

Many people and animals are in need in the wake of Japan's tsunami

The 8.9 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami that struck Japan today caused widespread death, injury and destruction. Relief organizations and governments around the world are responding to help people, and now several groups are stepping in to assist the animals impacted by the disaster as well.

There are a number of ways for people here and abroad to help the people and pets that were hurt or displaced. Sacramento pet expert and author Gina Spadafori reported today on recommendations made by her colleague, veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker.

For those interested in doing so, Becker suggests contacting the following organizations:

World Vets is an international veterinary aid organization that provides “free veterinary aid, resources and support during times of disaster all over the world”. Their non-profit efforts spans 25 countries and 6 continents, and handles both veterinary issues and human health issues caused by animal-related infectious diseases.

World Vets is already working to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami, and desperately needs donations. To learn more, click here for their website.

The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation is a non-profit, FEMA-certified agency that searches for survivors in the wreckage of catastrophic events such as the one is Japan.

NDSDF has already deployed six Canine Disaster Search Teams to respond to the current crisis; each task force is made up of approximately 72 members (including both humans and Urban Search and Rescue dogs) and some 75 tons of rescue equipment.

Help animals in Japan tsunami disaster

March 11 was a tragic day for Japan after a disastrous 8.9-magnitute earthquake shattered the eastern coast and resulted in a series of tsunamis that washed away homes, cars, and caused damage of catastrophic proportions. Relief organizations all over the world are responding to help the people and the animals of Japan.

The Search Dog Foundation is deploying six canine disaster search teams to assist with the rescues. The task force will be composed of approximately 72 personnel, including urban search and rescue dogs, and some 75 tons of rescue equipment.

Sadly, many animals have been injured in the earthquake and countless were left homeless. Here is some information about the rescue efforts by the local animal shelters. Below is a message from Elizabeth Oliver of Animal Refuge Kansai:

From our experience of the Great Hanshin earthquake on January 17th 1995, we know that the number of homeless pets may be immense. Here at ARK, we are preparing for what might be a huge influx of animals. We already have some facilities in place and a team of experienced staff able to deal with traumatized animals. We may have to build emergency shelters as well. The logistics of getting animal from the Tohoku/Sendai area is immense, since roads and other transport links have been cut and may take time to restore. Our only means to get animals down to Osaka may be by helicopter, which was one method we used after the Kobe earthquake. We will use our resources and know-how to help as many animals as we can, following this terrible disaster.

We are all greatly saddened and have been continually horrified by news of the devastation, following the recent earthquake here in Japan. We, the kitties at the JCN Kansai shelter, and the shelter itself, are all fine. However, we remain very concerned about the animals in the severely affected areas who may be overlooked in the midst of so much immediate need to address human concerns. We are working with two other no-kill organizations to coordinate plans for getting animals from these areas out to safety, and have already begun helping people with pets in crisis.

WANDER the dog which was abused with a metal chain leaving its face disfigured, has been put down on Saturday.

The female mongrel's condition had deteriorated drastically due to a 'cancer growth which is derived from the inflammation of her injuries' according to Lyn Loh, a volunteer at Mdm Wong's Shelter.

'Wander hasn't been eating and was down to her skin and bones. The growth on her face was so aggressive that her both eyes had been swollen shut.

'There is no quality of life left for her and we've had to make the painful decision to end her suffering,' she added on Mdm Wong's Shelter's Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mdm-Wongs-Shelter/312804877843).

Wander had been housed at the shelter since early January after being brought there.

The dog was allegedly abused by a China foreign worker according to a report on citizen journalism portal Stomp.

SHE was born thousands of kilometres away, in Britain.

But once she arrived here, Mrs Marjorie Doggett took up a cause that was closest to her heart – preventing human acts of cruelty against animals – and left a legacy for Singaporeans in the form of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

On Sunday night, Mrs Doggett died at her Toh Heights home of 33 years, after years of ill health.

She was 89.

Her key achievements after arriving here from England in 1947 include co-founding a voluntary service which rescued stray cats from Singapore's streets, which later morphed into the SPCA.

Thanks in large part to her efforts, the organisation has grown significantly, a far cry from its early days, when funding was scarce and supporters fluctuated due to a predominantly expatriate membership.

Mrs Doggett was so keen on protecting animals that in those days, she did much of the work herself. For example, qualified veterinarians were a rarity here, so she often resorted to rescuing cats from the streets and whisking them by car to the government's sole Animal Infirmary in Kampong Java.

'She started the ball rolling – and was still at it 60 years later,' said Ms Deidre Moss, SPCA's current executive officer, paying tribute to Mrs Doggett's passion, knowledge on animal issues and willingness to mentor younger volunteers.

'She was a walking encyclopedia, keeping so much literature on animal welfare,' added Ms Moss.

Policymakers also had the benefit of tapping into her knowledge on issues ranging from the wildlife trade to the use of animals in science laboratories, noted Mr Madhavan Kannan, former head of the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority's Centre for Animal Welfare and Control, who first worked with Mrs Doggett in the 1970s.

'She was one of the early pioneers among people who championed the cause of animals,' he said.

She also raised awareness of the issue by writing frequently to The Straits Times' Forum pages about the cruelty dealt to some animals here.

Mrs Doggett's relationship with animals started early. She grew up surrounded by them at her home in Sussex, England. By the time she was in secondary school, she was taking up the cause that would define her life, fighting for the rights of animals.

Mrs Doggett moved to Singapore with her husband, Victor, who was posted here by the Royal Air Force. They subsequently decided to settle here permanently, becoming Singapore citizens in 1960.

Mr Doggett died five years ago after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Besides animals, Mrs Doggett also had a passion for photography, and particularly liked capturing historical buildings, many of which have since been demolished. In 1957, a book entitled Characters Of Light was published, showing some of her collection.

But animals were far and away her first love. The couple's only son, Nicholas, 52, told The Straits Times that even as the end drew near, his mother maintained her fondness for critters, often surrounding herself with the family's seven pet cats.

He said that she had remained fiercely protective of them, even when her capacity to walk was hampered.

'We had a cat who would bully the other cats. She took me aside one night and said, 'you'd better stop that cat from terrorising the others. Otherwise, I will do it, even if I have to crawl out of my bed on all fours'.'

He added: 'She was strong willed in the things she believed in.
